Melbury is a fabulous Guest House located in the heart of Exeter and is gay owned and managed by a smashing couple of guys, Graham and Leon. The Melbury provides a stunning selection of en-suite accommodation from standard rooms to luxury suites, the latter having the timeless elegance of four-posters or the vibrancy of contemporary chic styling. All are immaculately presented and furnished and include power-showers, mini bars, LCD television, DVD player. It would appear that Graham and Leon have thought of every detail, even the little finishing touches that make staying here so special. The boys' ethos is quite simple: to provide the level of accommodation, service and style that they would expect if they were guests, and I have to tell you that their expectations are very high. The Melbury is fully licensed and has a splendid Victorian conservatory and garden patio area planted with sub-tropical palms and flora. It is also home to what can only be described as a Hydro Extravaganza Hot Tub that has 170 power jets that massage and soothe, and also has a sensational sound and light system. In the ancient and tranquil village of Marldon amidst the beauty of Devon's South Hams nestle five pretty holiday cottages in a courtyard setting with a glorious cottage garden. In the historic village of Buckland Monachorum within the Dartmoor National Park, we found a fabulous 16th century inn nestled between the church and the stream. It gets better. Mandy Robinson, the friendly and talented owner, has created a sensational contemporary self-catering apartment that will comfortably accommodate four people. It really is fabulously furnished and equipped in a very pleasing soft contemporary style set against quirky ceilings and exposed beams with a wealth of character, charm and atmosphere that you could only get from a 16th century building. Mandy has also ensured that this apartment is fully equipped for your holiday right down to the little things that you so often need but rarely find. The kitchen is hi-tech and superb. The great thing here is that if at any time you don't feel like cooking, the Drake Manor Inn serves some incredibly good food and has an extensive menu. A quick note for lovers of the amber nectar: the bar stocks more than thirty varieties of aged whisky. The inn, restaurant and apartment, together with their fabulous location, do make a great friendly and welcoming stay for your holiday.

When staying at The Four Seasons Guest House why not try the famouse "Round Robin" which is a trip down the River Dart to Dartmouth followed by a steam train ride from Dartmouth to Paignton, and then a return trip to Totnes by open air bus: a fabulous day out. One word of caution: for goodness sake, leave room for John's famous breakfasts as they are just fabulous and his breakfast menu is on of the most comprehensive and diverse that you are every likely to see. Famed for its floral displays and chocolate box appearance, it has immaculately presented, well equipped bedrooms and serves delicious bar and restaurant food. The atmosphere here is incredibly friendly and relaxed, and due to this it can get very busy in the high season, but the excellent friendly staff, headed by John Irvine, take it all in their stride and will not keep you waiting. Well worth a visit.

That is where we found Kathleen and Duncan's very elegant and sophisticated early Victorian home. It sits in a leafy and tranquil location on the fringe of this historic town. Oaklands has a wealth of period architectural features that are complemented by chandeliers, Victorian wrought iron bedsteads mahogany sleigh beds, homely throws and squidgy comfortable sofas; one bedroom even has its own balcony. The whole house has been lovingly furnished and the little extra touches such as antique alarm clocks all add to the wonderful, timeless, elegant atmosphere of this very pretty and charming country house.

Angela and John the friendly owners and Mandy their incredibly hardworking and helpful manager all excel themselves in providing superb accommodation, food and drink in a very warm, welcoming, comfortable and inviting atmosphere. The Red House is only one mile from the centre of Exeter with its vibrant atmosphere and famous historic Quay area with its many shops, café culture, bars and restaurants. What a super friendly and comfortable stay.

The super stylish interior includes hi-tech kitchen, Grohe rainshower, flat screen television in lounge and bedroom, iPod docking station, DVD. From the lounge, pretty views across to the Kingsbridge Estuary are afforded by french windows that lead to a patio area with seating and a gas barbecue. Fleur and Rob's style brief and finish is luxurious and hi-tech yet is does not detract from the unique cuteness of this super little hideaway for two.
